AbstractA two-dimensional numerical model for simulation of the effects of mulches was developed, and the governing equations were solved by the finite element approach of Galerkin-type together with the Douglas-Dupout prediction-correction method. A simulation program to predict the influence of porous and film mulches on heat and vapour transport under conditions of evaporation was developed and validated by field experiment. Preliminary application of the program showed that clear polyethylene film increased soil temperature the most effectively. However, there was little difference in the conservation of soil moisture for the three types of mulch, and paper coated with oil could significantly improve the soil microclimate for seed germination.
